We are pleased to offer 1991 Mercedes SWB G-Wagen Cabriolet s/n 072843. The G-Wagen was first introduced as the 460 model in 1979 in both a military and a civilian version. Fitted with a part-time four-wheel drive system, the G-Wagen was available with both gas and diesel power and came in short wheelbase, long wheelbase and soft top versions. In 1990 the much more luxurious 463 chassis G-Wagen received a major facelift and debuted at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. The new 463 chassis G-Wagen featured permanent 4-wheel drive, a completed new passenger-car spec interior in leather with wood trim and optional anti-lock braking system. The new G-Wagen was similar in appearance to its predecessors but with a substantial level of technical re-engineering and comfort enhancements, becoming a refined and well-appointed automobile without compromising its outstanding off-road qualities.

1991 Mercedes SWB G-Wagen s/n 072843 is a European model 463 sold new in Germany and then imported into the US in April 2001, was legalized by Wallace Environmental Testing Labs, Houston, Texas and received full EPA and DOT clearance in July, 2001. Like all G-Wagens, s/n 072843 was hand-built in Graz, Austria and like all Mercedes G-Wagens was designed to last a million miles. The G-Wagen is almost unstoppable in off-road conditions thanks to its fully locking differentials, its low center of gravity, its rugged ladder-style frame and solid axles. As one of the very few Cabrio models built, G-Wagen Cabriolet s/n 072843 makes for great summer and winter driving. Unique and sporty, the G-Wagens have developed a cult-like following, giving comfortable seating for four adults, taking them anywhere and everywhere with unparalleled SUV comfort and confidence.

The G-Wagen was never planned to be built for the US market, but the rules of importation changed in January 1987 when the U.S. Government curtailed the casual importation that had allowed many dealers access to hard-to-find vehicles. This led to Europa G-Wagen, LLC of Santa Fe, New Mexico undertaking the daunting task of certifying the G-Wagen to federal emissions and safety standards which included extensive crash testing. In October 1993 Europa completed its five-year, $500,000 U.S. certification program, including destructive and non-destructive vehicle testing, becoming the exclusive U.S. importer and distributor for the luxurious, second generation 463 chassis Gelaendewagen. In 1999, after nearly two years and over $1 million invested, Europa gained U.S. Small Volume Manufacturer status for the G-Wagen, finally making it a 50-state legal vehicle. 1991 Mercedes SWB G-Wagen Cabriolet s/n 072843 is one of less than ten SWB G-Wagen Cabriolets imported and certified as a US model between 1993 and today. In 2002 Mercedes purchased the U.S. distribution rights for the Gelaendewagen from Europa G-Wagen, LLC of Santa Fe, New Mexico, introducing the V8 powered G500 series on the same 463 chassis, but only in a LWB version and only as a hardtop. There has never been a US model SWB G-Wagen Cabriolet sold through the Mercedes dealership network.

1991 Mercedes SWB G-Wagen s/n 072843 is one of less than ten six-cylinder, Short Wheel Base G-Wagen Cabrios in the country. Powered by a Bullet-proof 3.0 liter Mercedes engine, it is finished in beautiful black metallic with black leather. It features a programmable interior heater, heated seats, full time 4 wheel drive and also has front and rear locking differentials. G-Wagen s/n 072843 was sold new in the US to the Childres family in Washington, then to its second owner in Douglasville, GA, and is now with its third US owner in Jacksonville, Florida.
