Today the youngest are 61 years old and the oldest are 79. They are the majority of our client base, many have been clients for multiple decades. - [Caveat Emptor](https://ferraris-online.com/caveat-emptor/): Ferrari never made a RHD 288 GTO, F40, F50 or Enzo, (excluding a few dozen built by Pininfarina for the Brunei Royal Family) and so none of these Supercars, either new or used, were registered in most Asian countries, (excluding Japan), as almost all Asian countries are RHD, no LHD allowed! And if a RHD car could be registered, the costs are eye watering. In Hong Kong, for instance, the tax is 46% of value on the first $150,000 HK Dollars (about $19,000 US dollars); 86% on the next $150,000 HKD; 115% on the next $200,000 HKD (about $25,500 USD) and 132% on the rest, so the HK Duty on a $2.5m F40 is about $3.3m USD, substantially more than the actual $2.5m purchase price, and then only if that car could indeed be registered! - [The Billion Dollar Week](https://ferraris-online.com/the-billion-dollar-week/): As always the Monterey car week is the focus of the collector car universe and the various auctions are the collector car market-makers, defining values and price directions. Looking through the different auction houses online offering, there is a deluge of “big dollar” cars hitting the market over just one week. As database obsessives are wont to do, it’s more than interesting to play with the numbers to understand the big picture and search for the trends. - [Importing an F50: A Tragi-Comedy in Two Acts, Act Two, the Department of NO at the EPA](https://ferraris-online.com/importing-an-f50-a-tragi-comedy-in-two-acts-act-two-the-department-of-no-at-the-epa/): Earlier this week we reviewed the byzantine process, way back in 2000 and 2001, of getting the DOT approval to import Ferrari F50 s/n 103496, an F50 which had been converted to racing specs and then run in forty different races in the 1998, 1999 and 2000 Maranello Ferrari Challenge and the 1998 and 1999 Porsche vs. Ferrari Challenge. - [Importing an F50: A Tragi-Comedy in Two Acts, Act one, the DOT](https://ferraris-online.com/importing-an-f50/): Act one, the not-so-friendly folks at the DOT: - [The West Coast Trans Am Series](https://ferraris-online.com/the-west-cost-trans-am-series/): My Daughter Colleen and I were at Thunderhill raceway on 8-9-10 April with our 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo GT3 car s/n 09-7-1066 for the first race in the West Coast Trans Am Series. The Trans Am Series has been around since 1966 and today races at famed East Coast tracks such as Sebring, Road Atlanta, Lime Rock, Mid-Ohio, Road America, Watkins Glen and more plus Laguna Seca and Sonoma on the West Coast. In 2017, the new stand-alone West Coast Championship was added to the Trans-Am Series, running at Thunderhill, then with the National Series at Laguna and Sonoma then back to the West Coast Series races at the Ridge in Washington, Portland, Utah Motorsport park and with the National Series at the season's last race at COTA in Austin, Texas. - [Cavallino: Thanks for Your Years of Dedication, Now Piss Off](https://ferraris-online.com/cavallino-thanks-for-your-years-of-dedication-now-piss-off/): Early on the morning of 12 Jan., Chris Current, the Chief judge at the Cavallino Classic sent a mass e-mail to the 50-odd Ferrari IAC/PFA certified judges, most due to be at Cavallino the next weekend. Chris wrote, in part, " I have been working with Canossa for some months with the draft list of potential judges and was shocked to learn a couple of days ago that five judges were not acceptable to Ferrari because they are independent sellers of used Ferraris in the U.S. and the U.K.  Ferrari and Canossa recently signed an agreement that has restrictions on the judges we can invite" Chris also wrote, "This has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of our judging or your integrity. As you know, every judge is held to the highest standard of behavior to avoid all conflicts of interest between what they do as a judge and their outside business". Chris added, "I personally regret the situation as we have established a long-term relationship with all judges such that you commit to being a judge if invited.  This includes adjusting your schedule and making financial commitments". Chris clarified the decision by writing: "Note that this applies only to the Cavallino Classic and has nothing to do with the IAC/PFA which is a totally independent body". In summary Chris wrote, "Again, I personally regret this situation.  It should not have happened and I will work to ensure it does not happen again". - [Finding a Ferrari for $100K or Less](https://ferraris-online.com/finding-a-ferrari-for-100k-or-less-2/): This month our esteemed editor wanted to move away from the high-end Ferraris to the bottom-end world of affordability for mere mortals—perhaps he is still suffering from million-dollar-Monterey shock. My mission statement was: “Find the best buy in $100k or less for a modern Ferrari” along with the corollary “Would any of these cars sell for $50k next year?” - [Ferrari F1, #10, 2011-2012, The Hybrid Era](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-10-2011-2012-the-hybrid-era/): In the ninth installment of this series we reviewed how Fernando Alonso and Renault had the right combination to win both the 2005 and 2006 titles. Kimi Räikkönen bounced back taking the title for Ferrari in 2007, but was beaten by Lewis Hamilton and McLaren in 2008. In 2009 the F1 Championship went hybrid and Brawn, an underfunded new team, would power Jenson Button to an unexpected Championship. Brawn became the only team to win both the Drivers’ Championship and the Constructors’ Championship in their first and only year of existence, before being sold to Mercedes. While KERS had been legal in F1 in the 2010 season, all the teams had agreed not to use it, in order to allow the top teams time to develop and perfect their own systems for the 2011 season. Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull dominated the 2010 season. In 2011 only three of the back-marker teams ran without KERS. For the 2012 season, only two teams would race without KERS, and by 2013 all teams on the grid would have KERS. - [Ferrari F1, #9, 2005-2010, a Changing of the Guard](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-9-2005-2010-a-changing-of-the-guard/): In the eighth installment of this series we reviewed how Michael Schumacher, Scuderia Ferrari and the dream team of Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne had absolutely dominated the 2000 to 2004 seasons, in part because of Ferraris close collaboration with Bridgestone, matching their tires to Ferraris chassis characteristics. After five straight seasons of Ferrari domination, the FIA felt drastic regulatory changes were needed to shuffle the deck and improve competition. The FIA also opined that harder and hence more durable tires would be safer by reducing cornering speeds and so the wise men at the FIA banned tire changes for 2005. Tires would have to last through both qualifying and the entire race, a distance of about 350 kms and could only be changed without penalty for punctures or dangerous flat spots. Pat Symonds, Renault’s Technical Director, opined that (in the upcoming 2005 season) “The driver who can look after his tires best, and has the feel for how to maximize tire performance over a full race distance, will undoubtedly gain a performance advantage”. Fernando Alonso in the Renault R25 would prove him right. - [Ferrari F1, #8, 2000-2004: The Michael Schumacher Championship Years](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-8-2000-2004-the-michael-schumacher-championship-years/): In the seventh installment of this series we reviewed the early years of Ferrari’s Schumacher-era, from 1996 to 1999. Ferrari’s dream team included team manager Jean Todt, technical director Ross Brawn and chief designer Rory Byrne, backed up by engine designers Claudio Lombardi and former Honda engine designer and exhaust specialist Osama Goto, under engine development team leader Paulo Martinelli. The F310 of 1996 and F310B of 1997 were competitive; the 1988 F300 and 1999 F399 both came close to winning the Championship and the F2000 would give Michael Schumacher and Ferrari their first World Drivers’ Champion in 21 long years and Ferrari their first Constructors’ Championship in 19 long years. The F2000 and its successors, the F2001, F2002, F2003GA and F2004 would absolutely dominate the 2000 to 2004 F1 Championships, giving both Michael Schumacher and Ferrari five consecutive Championships. - [Ferrari F1, #7, 1996-1999: The Early Schumacher Years](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-7-1996-1999-the-early-schumacher-years/): Where We Left Off - [Ferrari F1, #6, The Last of the V12S, 1989-1995](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-6-the-last-of-the-v12s-1989-1995/): John Barnard had a clean sheet and so had built the 639 test cars s/n 105 and 106 in 1988 for test driver Roberto Moreno at Fiorano, replacing them with the 640 for the 1989 season. Because the shifter was gone, the cockpit could be both narrower and more aerodynamic, and so both the 639 and later 640 featured a long sharp nose, a narrow tub and bulging side-pods for the radiators, in what is now the ubiquitous “coke-bottle” shape. Thanks to Barnard’s focus on aerodynamics, the 640 was fast out of-the-box, giving Mansell a win in its début race in Brazil. Indeed, Mansell had stated that if “the car had even half the horsepower it sounds like it has, we’ll win every race this year”. It was not to be, Mansell would DNF at the next four races while Berger would DNF in the first ten races and there were no races in which both drivers finished! When the 640 did finish, they would be on the podium. Mansell took a 1st in Brazil, a 2nd in both France and his home race at Silverstone, a 3rd in Germany, another 1st in Hungary and another 3rd in Belgium, good enough for 4th with 38 points. Berger scored a 2nd in Italy, a 1st in Portugal and a final 2nd in Spain ending in 7th with 21 points. - [Ferrari F1, #5, The Turbo Era, 1985-1988](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-5-the-turbo-era-1985-1988/): Click on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXuEvuyyy4k for the 1985 San Marino GP, which became a fuel economy race, when Senna’s Lotus, Johansson’s Ferrari, Nelson Piquet’s Brabham and Thierry Boutsen’s Arrows all ran out of fuel, handing the win to Alain Prost’s McLaren Tag, which ran out of fuel just as he crossed the finish line. Prost was later disqualified for being two kilos underweight, giving the win to Elio de Angelis. Boutsen finished second and Patrick Tambay finished third, both ran out of gas, pushing their cars across the last few yards to the finish line. - [Ferrari F1, #4, 1981-1984 The Turbo-Era Begins.](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-4-1981-1984-the-turbo-era-begins/): A decade later Renault would take a different path. Being French, the team’s obsession was to first win at Le Mans and then repeat that success in Formula One. In 1976 a single Garrett turbocharged 2.0 liter Renault- Alpine A442 entered the Le Mans 24 hrs. The Renault was fast, but dropped out with engine failure before mid-race. For the 1977 race the Renault Sport team fielded three team cars plus a privately entered A442, all DNFed. At Le Mans in 1978 the works Renault team entered three cars, an old A442, renamed A442A, the bubble-canopied A442B, and the A443, with all-French-drivers. The A443 was the rabbit, and while it broke in the 18th hour, it reached an impressive 236 mph on the Mulsanne Straight! The A442B inherited the lead, finishing four laps ahead of the second-placed Porsche. Following the 1978 all-French victory at Le Mans, Renault withdrew from sports car racing to concentrate their efforts in Formula One. - [Ferrari F1, #3, 1975-1980, The 312T](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-3-1975-1980-the-312t/): The Lauda-Hunt battle of 1975 had ramped up international television coverage, with Bernie Ecclestone landing the television rights. Ecclestone offered each of the constructors a share in the TV rights, which the constructors accepted. Ecclestone then packaged the TV rights to the Fuji showdown, but only if the various networks committed to showing the next year’s complete F1 season. And that is why Bernie Ecclestone today owns the best F1 car collection on the planet and is a Billionaire. - [Ferrari F1, #2, 1970-1974, The 312B](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-2-1970-1974-the-312b/): The best example of the innovative “Garagiste” of this era was Colin Chapman, who, in mid-1970 introduced the highly-pioneering Lotus 72, which featured a wedge shaped tub with side mounted radiators for better aerodynamics; a torsion bar suspension, inboard front disc brakes to reduce the dreaded un-sprung weight and an overhead air intake to feed the Cosworth V8. The lotus 72 also featured both anti-dive front and anti-squat rear suspensions, both of which would be mandatory to deal with the much higher levels of traction of the soon-to-be introduced slick tires. - [Ferrari F1, #1, 1966-1969](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-f1-1-1966-1969/): Times change and as the Enzo-era enthusiasts, the baby boomers, leave the market, a new and younger group of buyer’s lust after a newer era of supercars. Today’s collector often has a business that didn’t exist only twenty years ago. Perhaps they have developed an App, a software program or were an early-hire programmer at the right hi-tech company. In college they dreamt of F40s, F50s or Enzos. A decade or so ago they started with the latest-greatest road car, a 599 or a 458 and then added the cars of their dreams, usually starting with an F40 and then a 288 GTO, an F50, an Enzo and eventually a LaFerrari. The obligatory California T followed by a new 812 Superfast would keep his local authorized Ferrari dealer happy and guarantee the latest and greatest Ferraris kept coming for early delivery. - [Importing an F50: Part II](https://ferraris-online.com/importing-an-f50-part-ii/): In the last issue of Sports Car Market, we reviewed the byzantine process of importing a Ferrari F50, S/N 103496, which had been converted to racing specs and was last year’s winner of the European Maranello Challenge. - [Road & Track](https://ferraris-online.com/road-track/): On Tuesday Kim Wolfkill, the current editor of Road&Track, mentioned in an email to Stan Mott, one of the two creators of the R&T Cyclops (Robert Cumberford is the other) “…that Hearst is closing the Ann Arbor office and moving operations to New York City. The print magazine will now be run by the digital team. We’ll complete the current issue and then we’re all done at the end of the month.” Former R&T editor, John Dinkel, learned of this because he has been in correspondence with Stan regarding an until now secret effort by the Cyclops Faithful to attempt to set a world land speed record at Bonneville next August. But that’s another story for another day. - [Ferrari’s Fat Margins](https://ferraris-online.com/ferraris-fat-margins/): Further down the automotive food chain, Porsche margins run about $20,000 per car while Mercedes and BMW margins run in the $10,000 per car range. Maserati margins are in the $6,000 range although that will go up thanks to the top-of-the-line Levante SUV. Stepping across the channel Bentley has had a bad year because of the developmental costs of launching the third-generation Continental plus the substantial long-term cost of electric car technology for a 200 mph luxury car with the weight and frontal area of an American pickup truck. Bentley also miscalculated the time and sales lost trying to comply with Europe’s new WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) making for losses of about $20,000 on every Bentley sold! On this side of the pond, Ford, GM and Chrysler are slashing passenger car production and closing factories. Conversely, as for the planet’s green-car flagship, Tesla has, thanks to the model 3, finally found profitability in the third quarter and will probably be profitable in the fourth quarter, the first ever back-to-back quarterly profits for Tesla. - [Reliving The Moment](https://ferraris-online.com/reliving-the-moment/): Our story begins in 1984 at a time when Ferrari North America had their headquarters on Katella Avenue in Los Alamitos, a suburb in Orange County. At that time California Highway Patrol officer Bruce West owned a 308 GTS and, in a time when FNA was more client-friendly, Officer West would often drop by FNA’s warehouse to visit. The logistics and quality control of new cars coming through the FNA building was done by FNA employee Bob Nolan and FNA had just gotten in a 1983 126 C2B F1 car which was to be on display at the 1984 LA Auto Show. The 126 C2B had just been flown in from Germany and was apparently the car that was driven by Rene Arnoux in the 1983 season. Officer West had a CHP trainee with him, the trainee had a camera and so the above photo was staged. Officer West is seen writing the imaginary ticket, Bob Nolan is staged in the F1 car and the CHP trainee took the photo. - [Supercars by the Sea](https://ferraris-online.com/supercars-by-the-sea/): Supercars by the Sea was put together by enthusiast David Kuzmiak and is held on a massive State Park parking lot large enough to allow growth thanks to over a thousand parking slots next to Huntington’s sandy beach. Because it’s a State Park, new permits have to be issued every month for every event and parking is $15 but that certainly hasn’t held back enthusiasts. In less than a year they have gathered eight sponsors and with the help of co-organizer Alan Niedzwiecki, co-founder and former Board Member of Fisker Automotive, they hope to attract major sponsors such as Rolex. This weekend’s theme was “Gas Slayers versus Gas Savers” with the AMG Club providing the gas slayers and the Tesla Club providing the gas savers. - [Australia, Asbestos and the International Maserati Gathering](https://ferraris-online.com/australia-asbestos-and-the-international-maserati-gathering/): Readers of this column might remember “Australia, Asbestos and Collector Cars” from July 15th of last year, click here for the link. That column explained that in 2003 the Australian government issued a zero-tolerance ban on any-and-all asbestos products. This was aimed primarily at new cars built by the Chinese Great Wall car company which, despite claims to be asbestos free did indeed contain asbestos. Fast forward to March 6th 2018 when, without prior warning to Shipping and Customs agents, let alone to car owners, the Australian Border Force (ABF) began randomly (make that very randomly) testing imported collector cars for asbestos, without any procedures or practices on just how that could or would be done. - [Jumping Through Hoops](https://ferraris-online.com/jumping-through-hoops/): Our story begins with 2011 MBZ AMG SLS GT3 s/n 079 which we sold in late Nov. of last year for a client in Brisbane, Australia to a client in Victoria, BC, Canada. Upon arrival in Vancouver in late Dec. the not-so-friendly-folks at the Vancouver offices of Transport Canada decided that MBZ AMG SLS GT3 s/n 079 needed an export permit from Australia to enter Canada. - [Abarth/Lancia Classiche](https://ferraris-online.com/abarth-lancia-classiche/): Lancias were only officially sold in the US through Fiat dealers from 1975 until Fiat left the US market in 1982. In Europe, however, they were ferocious competitors on the rally circuits and developed a very devoted customer base. Unfortunately, the 1960s were not kind to niche marketers and so both Lancia and Ferrari found themselves being absorbed into Fiat in 1969. Under Fiat, Lancia won the 1972 International Rally title with the Fulvia and dominated the World Rally Championship which started in 1973! Lancia won the WRC’s constructors’ titles with the Stratos (1974, 1975 and 1976), the 037 (1983) and the Delta Integrale (six consecutive wins from 1987 to 1992). Indeed, the Integrale is the most successful individual model ever to compete in rallying while Lancia is, statistically, the most successful rally marque ever, despite having withdrawn at the end of the 1993 season. - [Alfa Romeo and Maserati Return](https://ferraris-online.com/alfa-romeo-and-maserati-return-to-formula-one/): Die-hard Ferrari and F1 aficionados will know that Enzo Ferrari joined Alfa Romeo as a driver in 1920, founded Scuderia Ferrari in 1929 and assumed management of the Alfa Romeo’s Grand Prix team, Alfa Corsa, from 1932 to 1939. Thanks to the legendary P2 and P3 Grand Prix cars, Alfa Romeo was able to put up a brave but losing pre-war fight against Mercedes and Auto Union. Post-WWII Alfa Romeo absolutely dominated Grand Prix racing from 1946 to 1949, winning almost every Grand Prix they entered. When Grand Prix racing was rebranded as Formula One in 1950, Nino Farina won the inaugural F1 World Championship behind the wheel of a then-twelve-year old supercharged Alfa 158 followed by Juan Manuel Fangio winning the Championship in 1951 driving an Alfetta 159, thanks to its evolutionary two-stage supercharger. Alfa was forced to withdraw from F1 in 1952 because of Ferrari’s success with the 375 F1 cars and the loss of Italian government funding of Alfa’s race program. In 1977 Alfa returned to the F1 circus with the flat-12 powered Alfa 177, which was soon replaced with the Marlboro sponsored V-12 powered 179 and later carbon fiber tubbed 182. For 1983 to 1985 the Benetton sponsored Alfa switched to 1.5-liter turbocharged V-8s before leaving F1 at the end of 1985, having never won a race. - [The Autonomous Car](https://ferraris-online.com/the-autonomous-car/): As of today some high-end new cars are level 2 with partial automation such as adaptive cruise control, radar auto-braking and lane-centering. In only three years, by 2020, many will be Level 4, which means highly automated; if something goes wrong and a human fails to intervene, the car can, in theory, save itself and its passengers. Level 5 will require no driver supervision, and therefore, in theory, will not need pedals or a steering wheel. - [In Defense of Fossil Fuels](https://ferraris-online.com/in-defense-of-fossil-fuels/): As I also wrote last month, this column is not meant as a denial of Global Warming. I’m not anti-Green, anti-EV or anti-ZEV, instead I merely point out that both EVs and ZEVs, to date, are far less Green than claimed when viewed in the context of the massive, unprecedented, update in the electrical infrastructure needed, which will be equally as massively subsidized by your tax dollars. Tesla’s Elon Musk’s genius has been in foreseeing the massive subsidies that governments worldwide would provide to suppliers of green technologies. U.S. Federal and state governments have given Tesla, Solar City and Space-X almost $5B through direct grants, cut-rate loans, tax credits and rebates, making Tesla a compliance company that makes cars, subsidized by massive Pigouvian corporate welfare. - [The Death of Fossil Fuels](https://ferraris-online.com/the-death-of-fossil-fuels/): Norway, the leader of the pack, wants to become the most ecologically progressive country on the planet and has also decreed that they will become the first country in the world to commit to zero deforestation. Today Norway can boast that about 24% of the country’s cars already run on electricity and 99% of Norway’s electricity comes from hydropower. By waiving the high (roughly 100%) sales taxes on non-electric cars (and app $11 a gallon for gas), Norway subsidizes Tesla and other fully-electric cars. Electric cars can cruise in the bus lanes and toll roads for free, parking is free and new charging stations are being built on the nation’s highways. - [Ferrari Classiche Revisited](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-classiche-revisited/): The Factory’s Classiche in-house restoration department was officially opened July 2006 by then-president, Luca di Montezemolo, with vice-president Piero Ferrari, the son of Enzo Ferrari as Chairman of the Classiche Certification Committee. Ferrari Classiche is not a “restoration shop”, but instead an assembly and delivery shop. Almost everything is outsourced. V-12 engines are built by Modena Motori, 4-cylinders are built by Hall & Hall. New body panels are usually done by Autosport in Bastiglia or by Brandoli in Montale. Paint and body work is done by Carrozzeria Mirage or Zanasi. Interiors are done in house. Needless to say, Ferrari Classiche marks up any work under its direction and while it makes little financial sense to have one’s 308 rebuilt at Ferrari Classiche, a majority of the most valuable 1950s and 1960s Ferraris must be restored at the factory to get the Red Book certification. I’m told the average markup on sublet work is about 40%. - [Australia, Asbestos and Collector Cars](https://ferraris-online.com/australia-asbestos-and-collector-cars/): Our story begins in 2003 when the Australian government issued a zero-tolerance ban on any and all asbestos products, aimed mainly at imported Chinese drywall, a problem America also faced at the time. Fast forward to March 6, 2017 when, without prior warning to Shipping and Customs agents, let alone to owners, the Australian Border Force (ABF) began randomly testing all imported collector cars for asbestos, without any industry consultation, procedures or practices in place. One of our clients had two cars already en-route to Australia and so had no choice but to comply. One was a 1966 Shelby Mustang 350 GT and the second a stock 1966 Mustang donor-car, found together as “barn finds” and imported into Australia for restoration. - [1031 Tax Trades Revisited](https://ferraris-online.com/1031-tax-trades-revisited/): Collector cars are now a recognized asset class, so your collector car should qualify as a capital asset. You did buy it as “an investment”, taxed at 20% and not as “a collectable”, taxed at 28%, right? You’ve owned it for over a year so any profit is taxed as a long-term capital gain. On the Federal level, the bad news is that Obama (the collector car Grinch) raised long term capital gains to today’s 20%. He also added in a 3.8% Medicare (Affordable Care Act) tax if your adjusted gross income is at least $200k (or $250k on a joint return). And yes, the gain on the sale of your collector car is added to your total income. F.W.I.W. once you exceed an adjusted gross income of $200k all of your net investment income is taxed at that additional 3.8%. Adding to the pain, your other silent partner, the State in which you live, has their own tax rates. California will get you for 13.3% while a few more tax-friendly states such as Florida and Texas have zero state Capital gains tax. If you’ve owned your car for less than a year, it’s a short-term capital gain taxed as ordinary income. - [How many 599 SA Apertas?](https://ferraris-online.com/how-many-599-sa-apertas-2/): F.W.I.W. in British slang, an anorak is a socially inept person, usually male, with an obsessive-compulsive hobby that includes tracking and recording incredibly detailed information on arcane subjects, such as trains, or cars, or airplanes, or luxury yachts, all of which is normally regarded as more than staggeringly boring by the rest of the population. This obsessive-compulsive knowledge of Ferrari history, ownership and sales data has been a major basis of our business model for the last four decades. - [Ferraris and Dutch Auctions](https://ferraris-online.com/ferraris-and-dutch-auctions/): Today’s collector car format is traditionally known as an English auction, also known as an open ascending price auction, and dates back to England in the 1700s, as London had become the world’s center of finance and commerce. Sotheby’s, founded in London in 1744, is the oldest of the English auction houses, with Christies following in 1766 and Bonham’s in 1793. The English auction typically has a long lead time with marketing by the traditional auction catalogs, a tradition started by Christies in 1766, and today, mass internet marketing. Inspections are normally done on the day of sale, giving most buyers little time for document reviews or pre-purchase inspections and no chance for a test drive. This well established format is customarily used for collector cars, works of art and real estate. In the US, high water prices are traditionally attained at major venues such as Scottsdale, Amelia Island and the Monterey weekend, where huge crowds of well-heeled aficionados gather to meet, see-and-be-seen and compete at shows, races and on the auction floor. The larger the crowd, the greater the energy, the higher the bid. - [And You Thought Ferraris were expensive?](https://ferraris-online.com/and-you-thought-ferraris-were-expensive/): While we get several hundred e-mails every day, endless phone calls and no lack of text messages, few have ever gotten my attention more than a text received on 04 April at 2:58 P.M., which read “Dude. Just lost an engine at 18k ft out of TEB emergency landing into Philly!!!! Moving my Gulfstream into position to get me to JAX”. For those who don’t know, when a jet loses an engine on climb out, it’s much the same as having one rear brake suddenly lock while accelerating onto a freeway on ramp, but without the option of being able to pull over to the side of the road. The airport is far behind, far below, getting back can be problematic and gravity is not your friend. - [The Private Market](https://ferraris-online.com/the-private-market/): Most people know us from the cars we offer on our website, and the pedantic columns I have enjoyed writing for multiple magazines and subscribers to our website over several decades, but for over four decades many of our transactions, and certainly the larger transactions, have been off the usual radar screens. - [The affordability Factor](https://ferraris-online.com/the-affordability-factor/): Had I been able to move further up the Ferrari financial food chain, I could have stepped up to a new 246 GT, Ferrari’s first US compliant entry level V6, at $13,700, (or $300 more for a GTS), which represented almost two years median income. As for Ferrari’s front-engined V12 supercar, the 365 GTB/4 Daytona, its list price of $20,775 would absorb two-and-a-half years income, making a new Ferrari the stuff of dreams. - [Sticker Shock](https://ferraris-online.com/sticker-shock/): Most Ferrari market followers would agree that values for Enzo- and Fiat-era Prancing Horses peaked close to the 2014 Monterey auctions and are now off by around 30 percent. Similarly, many Montezemolo-era cars peaked in late 2015 and are now off by the same percentage. In either case, you might never know values were falling if you looked only at asking prices—and the reason is something psychologists call the “entitlement effect.” - [A Pilgrimage to Maranello – PART 2](https://ferraris-online.com/a-pilgrimage-to-maranello-part-2/): As readers of this column know, we had traveled to Italy for RM’s Duemila Route auction in Milano followed by a two day whirlwind tour of the various shops and museums in the Modena-Maranello area. - [A Pilgrimage to Maranello – PART 1](https://ferraris-online.com/a-pilgrimage-to-maranello-part-1/): As regular readers of this column know, we were at the RM Duemila Route auction at the Milano Trade Fair on 25–27 November to inspect; report back to our clients; bid on and hopefully purchase eighteen different cars for seven different clients. It was not to be. - [A Black Swan](https://ferraris-online.com/a-black-swan/): The party ended in December of 2013 when the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Financial police) confiscated the collection for tax evasion and VAT fraud. While the complex case drags through the courts and the dynasty that was “North East Services” is no more, various reports state there was 20m €uro plus missing from the company’s vaults. - [But Mine is Better](https://ferraris-online.com/but-mine-is-better/): Every article is inspired by an e-mail exchange or a phone call that screams the need to reach for the keyboard and start typing. A while back a client called to ask the value of his 246 GT, a high serial number US model Dino Coupe, from new with Chairs and Flares, sold new in Canada and in dead storage for many decades. It had not been road registered for over a decade. Indeed, the client had not seen his Dino in years, but had seen the rise in prices and called in response to the sale of 246 GT s/n 04946 which had sold at Goodings, Scottsdale in 2014 for $473k. - [It’s a Buyer’s Market](https://ferraris-online.com/its-a-buyers-market/): The Ferrari market rises and falls in cycles influenced by the global economy, generational shifts and currency swings. The collectable Ferrari market was last a buyer’s market just after the double whammy of the real estate crash of 2007 and the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy in September of 2008. That market bottomed in 2010 and started a strong recovery, peaking in 2014. As we look back to the heady days of 2014, we then received only one or two calls or emails a day from people who wanted us to help them to market their Ferraris. There were more buyers than sellers. Today, we receive half a dozen calls or emails every day and the number is growing. The roles have reversed. Today there are more sellers than buyers. - [Brexit!](https://ferraris-online.com/brexit/): Voting was strong, with a 72.2% voter turnout. England and Wales voted to leave by relatively narrow margins while Scotland voted 62% to stay and Northern Ireland voted 55.8% to stay. The £ Sterling had already dropped by 7.5% over the past 12 months as the Leave camp had slowly gained momentum. In the near term, investors were no doubt over-reacting. Britain will not leave the EU tomorrow and the divorce proceedings to extract the UK from the EU will take at least two years. The Brexiteers are hoping to negotiate a Swedish- or Swiss-style EEA (European Economic Association) that preserves the UK’s access to the EU. None the less, there is no doubt that both UK and EU economic momentum will decline and the affect will ripple throughout Europe, with the triple threat of immediate, short term and long term consequences! - [Ever Moving Markets](https://ferraris-online.com/ever-moving-markets/): In early 2014 we felt the market for the Enzo-era Italian exotics was peaking and so between April and Sept., of 2014 we sold my non-Factory Comp Daytona s/n 14049 (with a 4-hour of Le Mans history), my Platinum-level 365 BB s/n 18265 and my Ghibli Spyder s/n 1227. All were personal cars and not inventory. I believe and live by what I write, voted with my wallet, left the Ferrari price party (and gave 35% to my unwanted partner, Uncle Sam). - [The Market Correction](https://ferraris-online.com/the-market-correction/): Collectable Ferraris, like all commodities, trade on a world-wide market. That market has doubled and doubled again in only five years, a classical bubble run-up. Although some will disagree, we believe that the market for the Enzo-era Ferraris peaked at Monterey in 2014 and is now off by 25%-30%. After a weak five-year recovery, the global economy is slowing down. Economic headwinds include China’s massive bank debt (at 260% of GDP!!) coupled with a stock market, real estate and construction slowdown. In the US debt is now $19 trillion, debt per person is $58,000 and no-one in either party has a viable plan to cut that debt! Looking to Europe, the looming costs of integrating a million plus refugees who do not speak English, or German, or French, or Danish, or Swedish will be massive. Let’s not forget the threat of a possible “Brexit” or the possibility of an Italian banking implosion (thanks to a 21% non-performing loan rate). And the list goes on. - [The Generational Shift](https://ferraris-online.com/the-generational-shift/): In October 1974 the world suffered through the first Arab oil embargo as gas prices rocketed from an affordable 30 cents a gallon to a then-shocking $1 a gallon in only months. The market for exotic cars imploded with near-new Dinos available for $5k – $7.5k and Daytonas at $15k. By 1977 the economy recovered, a few hardworking baby boomers did well and thanks to low prices and a booming global economy the collectable Ferrari market was born. We have been selling to that same world-wide demographic group of buyers since the early 1970s and still sell the same cars to many of the same demographic group today. - [Ferrari Enters the Marchionne-Era](https://ferraris-online.com/ferrari-enters-the-marchionne-era/): The Europa GT was introduced in 1954 and within two years evolved into the dual-purpose 250 TDF, as the differentiation between full-racer and milder street car started to widen. In yet another five years the TDF evolved and separated into the full-race 250 GTO for the hard-core racers and the much higher-volume 250 Lusso street cars to help pay the bills. Only two years hence the 275 GTB and GTS followed and within another half a decade morphed into the 365 GTB/4 Daytona. The racing department was further subsidized by the building of a series of ultra-exclusive limited production and one-off coach built cars for the mega-rich. Starting as a race and machine shop, Ferrari rapidly grew from only 2 cars built in 1947 to 619 cars built in 1969, making the transition to small manufacturer. - [Auction House One-Upmanship](https://ferraris-online.com/auction-house-one-upmanship/): Gooding and RM usually vie for the most spectacular headline Ferraris and this year was not a disappointment. In our Ferrari-focused world, RM’s announcement of Ferrari, 250 LM s/n 6045 is a headliner and will be another eight-figure Ferrari, while Mecum has 375 MM 0362 AM which will assuredly be yet another eight figure Ferrari. Gooding is expected to announce they have 365 P 3-Posti s/n 8971, yet another eight-figure Ferrari. RM is also expected to announce they have 275 GTB/C s/n 6701, one of three 275 GTB prototypes built for FIA homologation. It will be yet another eight-figure Ferrari. It will be a wild and crazy week with no lack of heavy iron and some stunning new market prices. ## Pages - [Cars For Sale](https://ferraris-online.com/cars-for-sale/): Featured Classic Ferraris And Collector Exotics for Sale - [Cars Sold](https://ferraris-online.com/cars-sold/): Make - [Guides](https://ferraris-online.com/guides/): Coming Soon We're working on a collection of helpful guides and resources to make your Ferrari buying, selling, and ownership experience even easier. Today, when we sell a car we let potential buyers see the car start, hear the engine perform under various speeds and conditions, watch the car run through the gears, and have the opportunity to learn the history of the car all while watching a high quality video. We not only video the cars we have on consignment, but occasionally will also video cars that we have helped source and purchase for clients. Once bought, we assist in arranging the trucking and have the cars shipped to us for a video post sale. During the video process the cars are driven for anywhere from 30 minutes all the way to two hours, giving us a chance to evaluate the condition of the car and recommend any possible maintenance for the clients to make sure they can safely and confidently enjoy their car when it is finally shipped to them. - [Newsletter](https://ferraris-online.com/newsletter/): Ferrari Newsletter: Market Updates & Collector Insights SELL YOUR FERRARI VIEW INVENTORY - [Sell Your Car](https://ferraris-online.com/sell-your-car/): Get a fast, competitive offer for your Ferrari from trusted exotic car buyers. In the early 1970s, we began our long restoration career repairing heavily crashed exotic cars for State Farm, USAA, and Auto Club Insurance, growing to become North America's largest Ferrari restoration shop. In the late 1970s, the boom in transforming Daytona Coupes into Daytona Spyder conversions was all the rage, and we gave many coupes a haircut. That market faded as interest rates climbed past 20% in 1980. We then followed the market to Japan, where we conducted a tremendous amount of business for many years. Each time the market shifted its focus, we shifted right along with it. - [Links](https://ferraris-online.com/links/): The register for Ferrari 308 GTB carburetted models. - [Looking For](https://ferraris-online.com/looking-for/): Five decades of Ferrari expertise, one conversation away.
