Lamborghini burst upon the small world of limited-production super-exotic cars in March, 1965 at the Geneva Motor show with the introduction of the Lamborghini 350 GT. At a time when the Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 had a steel body, twin-cams, triple Webers, a 4-speed with overdrive and a solid rear axle, the all-new Lamborghini 350 GT was clothed in a light-weight Superleggera alloy-body by
a four-cam 3.5 liter V-12 with six side draft 40 DCOE Webers and a smooth-shifting 5-speed ZF transmission put power to the rear wheels through a bullet-proof Salisbury self-locking differential. The 3.5 liter V-12 was good for 280 hp at 6,500 rpm. Handling was impressive thanks to a fully independent four-wheel suspension and braking used dual Girling power boosters. The Lamborghini 350 GT was an evolutionary step well over Ferrari’s competing 330 GT 2+2! Lamborghini also built two 350 GTS Spyders which were constructed by Carrozzeria Touring in 1965 with s/n 0325, finished in Gold with black leather first shown at the November 1965 Turin Auto Show. The second 350 GTS, s/n 0328 was finished  in black with green leather. These two Factory built spyders are probably worth $2,000,000 plus each today. Lamborghini produced only one hundred-twenty 350 GTs before replacing it with the Lamborghini 400 GT in 1966.

The production 400 GT was designed as a 2+2 and was first shown at the 1966 Geneva Auto Show, with the bodywork by Carrozzeria Touring. The body was now steel with a higher roof line, larger side windows and a smaller back glass. The larger body shape enabled the +2 seating to be installed in the rear,  The 400 GT 2+2 also had a Lamborghini designed gearbox, with Porsche-style synchromesh on all gears, which greatly improved the drive train. Thanks to the 4-liter engine power was increased to from 280 hp to 320 hp at 6,500 rpm. Only 227 total 400 GT 2+2 were built from 1966 to 1968.

Our feature car, 1967 Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 s/n 0877 is the 107th of 247 400 GTs built and was sold new in early 1967 by Lambocar, then the Lamborghini dealer for Milan, Italy. 400 GT 2+2 s/n 0877 was most recently sold by RM to the current owner in May, 2020 and only a month later was shipped to Newport Specialty Cars, Huntington Beach, Ca, for the drop-top spyder conversion at a cost of $79,500 USD. 400 GT 2+2 s/n 0877 was next treated to a complete repaint in red at a cost of $22,000 before going to Tim Taylor’s Red Car Restorations in Rockwall, Texas in 2021 for a mechanical restoration which included a rebuild of the carbs and a full rebuild of the steering. The drop-top conversion was carried out to a standard equal to or exceeding factory requirement. 400 GT 2+2 s/n 0877 looks great with the top up or the top down and when the top folds down it is almost out out sight, with an easy to use tonneau cover that snaps in place. The interior is a nice place to be and has obviously been redone in the recent past, with a large wood-rimmed Nardi steering set in front of a black leather covered dash and the black leather dash pod housing a full set of Jaeger instrumentation. The light tan carpets are in near-new condition and are protected by Lamborghini logo’ed throw carpets. A Borletti air conditioning unit features large vents and is mounted under the glovebox where it blow cold. Additionally the power windows can be lowered for fresh air cruising. The body is straight and the red paint is near-new and has no flaws.

Today Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 s/n 0877 is one of just 247 Lambo 400 GTs built and is the only drop-top Lambo 350 or 400 GT extant in North America. If you are a Lamborghini  aficionado that wants to go topless, backed by the sound of a  Giotto Bizzarrini  designed 4-cam, 4-liter V12 engine fed by 6 Weber carburetors that exemplifies Lamborghini’s earliest design and engineering efforts, this is your ride.
