We are pleased to offer 1969 Alfa Romeo “roundtail” Spider Veloce s/n 1796. Launched at the Geneva Motor Show on March 10, 1966, the “new Spider” was stylish, sporting and user-friendly. Made famous by Dustin Hoffman in “The Graduate”, the Roundtail Spider epitomized the exotic-yet-perhaps-someday-affordable topless Italian sports car for millions of young Baby-Boomers. Forty-five years later the Pininfarina design has remained a timeless blend of late 1960s aerodynamics and aesthetics. The low nose featured an artfully integrated grille, slim bumpers, plexi-covered headlights and equally integrated symmetrical rear bodywork. The instrument cluster featured two enormous round Jaeger clocks reading rpm and mph with secondary gauges for fuel, oil pressure and coolant temperature centered in the dashboard and aimed at the driver. Only the radio is non-original. Unlike other sports cars of the era, the Alfa’s folding soft top is very easy to use, looks good up and down and disappears when folded. The cockpit is roomy, the seats are supportive and small children or a third adult can squeeze into the space behind the seats. By sports car standards the trunk is cavernous. Due to the then-evolving EPA and DOT regulations, there were no 1968 or 1970 model years for Alfa in the US. The “roundtail” Spider Veloce was only sold new in the US in 1967 and 1969. All 1969 US models were fitted with the 1,750 cc engine and SPICA mechanical fuel injection, but like many Alfas, Spider Veloce s/n 1796 has been converted to dual Webers making it responsive and easy to maintain. The original SPICA mechanical fuel injection is with the car. Alfa Spider s/n 1796 has service records going back to 1994, twenty-one years. All major mechanical components have been serviced through its life. The engine, transmission, brakes and suspension all work as new. Alfa Spider s/n 1796 is a delight to drive, making excellent power with no smoke and has excellent oil pressure. The suspension is firm yet compliant and the brakes stop the car effectively and evenly. Second gear synchro is excellent, both when warm and cold. Alfa Spider s/n 1796 is a high-level driver, smooth, light and lively, meant to be enjoyed on a sunny Sunday. The Pininfarina body is straight and dent free, the panel fit is excellent. The Alfa red paint is very nice and the black vinyl and padded dash are in very good condition. The door panels, rubber mats and carpets are also all in good condition. The body, paint and panel fit are all in good condition. The trim, gaskets, window glass and lenses are also in excellent condition. The stainless steel bumper and grille are in good condition. Alfa Spider s/n 1796 is a very clean car topside and on the underside and chassis. It is fitted with a good set of Sumito HTR 200 195/70/14 tires. The alloy block and head, twin-cam 1,750 cc engine is essentially bulletproof and the 5-speed gearbox gives a positive, gated feel. Fourth gear is direct drive and fifth is an overdrive gear. Thanks to the low rear differential ratio (4.555:1) low speeds are nimble and responsive yet cruising at 75 mph all day long is effortless, something that cannot often be said for many 1960s sports cars. The Alfa’s four-wheel Ate brakes were considered advanced for a car of this era, in this price range and are still excellent by today’s standards. An active aftermarket and club support scene makes the Spider Veloce a sports car you can actually use without hesitation. The Spider Veloce is pre-rubber-bumper and pre-smog car making it a well-balanced, user-friendly cult collector car about as close to a pure sports car as one can get for the cost of a Ferrari down-payment. Comes with all service records back to 1994, the original owner’s manual, tool kit, jack, two sets of keys and the spare.
