We are pleased to offer 1974 US model Ferrari 246 GTS Dino s/n 07740, a  ready-to-go-or-show example with a very high chassis number and a March 1974 build date. Both the 206 GT and 246 GT coupes and the later 246 GTS spyders were the first evolution of Ferrari’s higher-volume, more affordable, smaller-engine exotics, meant to appeal to a larger market than the flagship V-12s, and were the first of the long line of V6 and later V8 Ferraris that have evolved into today’s massive commercial success for Ferrari. Named after Enzo Ferrari’s son, Alfredino, who died in 1956 of muscular dystrophy at the age of 24, the Dino was the first of the “baby” Ferraris – smaller, lighter and more nimble than the larger 12-cylinder street Ferraris. Its transverse mid-engine was a Ferrari first in a street car, and the four-cam V6 shows its direct racing heritage from the V6 powered 196 SP, 206 SP, 246 SP and the V6 powered F2 Ferraris. The sleek and sensuous Pininfarina designed and Scaglietti built 246 GT and GTS stand as one of the most beautiful and exotic street model Ferraris ever built, epitomizing the pre-computer Enzo-era Ferraris.

246 GTS s/n 7740 has a known history from new, being built in March of 1974, finished in Giallo Fly Yellow with black leather and shipped on 28 March by SEFAC Ferrari to Luigi Chinetti Motors, the authorized Ferrari Importer, and then sold  in April 1974 to the first owner, Mr. Rudolph Atlas, Englewood Cliffs, NJ. In 1976 246 GTS s/n 07740 was sold to the second owner, Mr. Ken Iscol, Stamford, CT with 7,481 miles. She was kept by Ken Iscol from 1976 to 2005, so twenty-nine years, before being sold to and restored by F40 Motorsports for the third and current owner in Cherry Hill Colorado with 65,096 miles. In May of 2008 the engine was rebuilt by Bill Evenden of Ferrari of Denver, the total invoice was $20,561.23 at 66,867 miles. We have several dozen service invoices from Ken Iscol’s 1976 to 2005 ownership on file, plus another several dozen invoices from the third and current ownership, from 2005 until today. Please see the ownership and service history below for a summary of each of the many dozens and dozens of historical service invoices. Today 246 GTS s/n 07740 has 70,345 miles from new for an average of only 1,465 miles per year over the last 48 years!

246 GTS s/n 7740 has been regularly serviced and maintained by it’s three owners over the last forty-eight years. The total cost of the engine rebuilt in 2008 was $20,561.23 at 66,867 miles. Today 246 GTS s/m 7740 has 70,345 miles so there are only 3,478 miles since the rebuild was completed. Thanks to the rebuild in 2008 she starts instantly, runs well and pulls strongly to redline, the trans shifts well when warm although 2nd gear syncro, like that on most Dinos, requires care when cold. The car runs and drives superbly. The engine sounds great through the RPM range and makes excellent power. It is well tuned and responsive. The suspension and chassis are exceptionally good, with a perfect blend of compliance and firmness and no sloppiness. The brakes have excellent grab and are very capable. The engine compartment is extremely clean following the rebuild and is largely original in appearance, other than the cam covers have been painted in red wrinkle paint. The front compartment is all original and excellent with the correct windscreen washer bag, a standard Campagnolo spare and the correct and undamaged front plastic liner. The trunk is correctly finished in its original black carpeting with the correct undamaged rear plastic inner liner and is in excellent shape.

246 GTS s/n 7740 was repainted to very high standards in 2005-2006 by F40 Motorsports at  Portland, CT and the color was changed from Giallo Fly Yellow to Ferro Grigio, a correct period Dino color. The paint is holding up beautifully today, considering its age, thanks, in part, to clear bra on the nose. It has excellent luster and the fit and finish are extremely good. The panel fit is very good throughout, and there are only a few small blemishes; a slight yellowing of the plastic clear bra, a crack in the paint on the seam on the trunk lid and some small scratches on the Targa top. The chrome is very good to excellent throughout, with a small area of deterioration to the finish on the rear reflectors. There is a wiper scratch on the lower passenger’s side corner of the windshield. The wheels and tires are excellent and the car sits on a set of modern Michelin 205 70R 14 tires. The lights and lenses are in good shape, and the car has nicely fitted plexiglass headlamp covers which smooth the already elegant lines of the car.

The interior was redone by Jon Gunderson’s Dino Interiors in 2015 and so it is excellent, with stunning upholstery work on the seats and Daytona style seat inserts strips which are finished in a subtle matching Ferro Grigio leather. The carpets are also exceptionally nice although more plush than the original. The mouse fur dash covering is new and in excellent shape. The center console and side sill upholstery also appears to be beautifully preserved original material. The instruments and controls also appear to be original and well-preserved. The steering wheel has been recovered and re-stitched and so is as-new. The radio is a modern Alpine unit. The interior of the Targa top is in excellent shape.

246 GTS s/n 07740 has a known ownership history from new, came from new with leather “Daytona” seats, A/C and P/W and features an obsessively documented ownership and service history back to the original Factory Certificate of Origin the invoice from Ferrari to Chinetti and the shipping docs to the US.  All systems work “as-new”, and the engine is well tuned, it starts instantly, makes great power, and sounds fantastic! The chassis and suspension are tight and the brakes are effective and responsive. Thanks to the Dino’s low sweeping body lines and the sounds of the well-proven, low-maintenance, high-revving V-6 right behind your seat, every trip to Starbucks sounds, drives and feels like a qualifying lap at Sebring. The plexiglass headlamp covers add to the elegant lines of the car and she comes with an owner’s manual, a second set of keys and voluminous album with service and ownership documents and photos from the strip and paint. We welcome any mechanical or body inspection. Priced right at $429,500.
