Model History:
As the first of today’s Montezemolo-era cars, the original 456 GT was first introduced at the F40 Ferrari celebrations in Belgium in Sept. 1992. Billed as the spiritual replacement for the Daytona, the 456 GT was better described as the heir to the 365 GTC/4, combining the looks and performance of a two-seat berlinetta with comfort and occasional seating for four. Based on a traditional steel tube frame, but with an alloy body, the 456 GT received an electronically adjustable suspension with three user-selected settings, as well as speed-sensitive power steering. An all-new 5,474cc 65° V12 featured dry-sump lubrication put out 442 hp thanks to Bosch Motronic engine management. The 456 GT sprinted to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds, through the quarter mile in 13.4 seconds at 107.5 mph and on to a top speed of 186 mph, making the 456 GT the then-fastest 4-seat production car on the planet. The 456 GT also features Ferrari’s first road-going active aerodynamic device: a small spoiler that deployed from underneath the rear bumper. In a dramatic change from the over-styled and “busy” lines of the then-contemporary Testarossa and 348, Pininfarina designed and built the very clean and uncluttered 456 GT body. The cockpit’s focus was on luxury, with full Connolly leather, fully adjustable seats and easy-to read gauges. Air-conditioning and heating were up to real-world standards and the comfortable and quiet cockpit made long journeys easy – at least for front-seat occupants. The interior’s refinement carried over to the driving experience. The V12’s output was seamless, ride quality was excellent and the steering and clutch were light. In 1998 the updated 456M (for Modificata) was introduced. The M received a light face-lift—the most noticeable changes were the deletion of hood vents in the now-carbon-fiber hood, with the fog lights set in the grille rather than the bumper—and a much more modern-feeling interior. Anti-dive was incorporated in the front suspension and the larger 330 mm brake discs from the 550 Maranello were fitted at the front. While no more powerful on paper than the original 456 GT, the M felt faster in the real world. It was also more refined and better handling than its predecessor, thanks to the introduction of traction control and revised shock absorbers.

An Absolutely-No-Expenses-Spared Service:
In Nov., 2022, at 13,778 miles, a compression check confirmed that the exhaust valves guides had excessive wear, as the 456M shared the same basic valve guide as the early 355s, and so the engine came out and the heads came off for twelve new exhaust valves, twelve new intake valves, twenty-four new valve guides and twenty-four new valve adjuster shims. The valve springs tension was checked and new head gaskets, intake manifold and exhaust manifold gaskets were installed. The camshaft journals were line bored and the camshaft seal surface was polished. The oil pan was removed and the oil pickup was checked and cleaned. The front and rear seals were replaced. During assembly a new front timing case gasket, new cam seals, new cam belts, new cam belt tensioners and all new coolant hoses were installed. Twelve new spark plugs were installed and the fuel injectors were sublet and flow-tested by Marren Fuel Injection before re-assembly. The clutch was inspected, the water pump was resealed and a new thermostat was installed. A new alternator and a new battery were installed. All new accessory belts, new motor mounts, fresh coolant, fresh oil and new pollen, air, gas and oil filters were installed. While the engine was out all parts were cleaned and glass beaded where possible. The A/C system was serviced and updated to R134 Freon. While the engine was out the two new high-flow FabSpeed catalytic converter were installed, the front hood struts were replaced and the rear shocks were rebuilt with new bushings installed. Four new Continental Extreme Contact 255/45/ ZR17 front and 285/40/ZR17 rear tires were installed and the ride-height was reset. Total parts were $12,545.90, sublet machining by Circle Performance machining was $8,936.00, sublet fuel injection was $473.65 and labor was about $22,000. All work is invoice and photo documented.
While the engine work was in process 456 M GT s/n 112883 had the dash, headliner, rear package shelf, upper rear headrests and side panels removed for all new leather covering. All switches, controls and latches were also removed. The leather work was sublet to BJ MacDonald’s Dart Competition, 6125 German Road, Pipersville, Pa 18947 and the sticky switches were sublet to Sticky No More, 15159 Prescott Ct., Waldorf, Maryland. 20601. The leather work labor and materials was $12,000.00 and the bill from Sticky No More was another $1,400.00. The labor to pull and re-install the dash, gauges, switches, heater and A/C ducting and overhaul the electric seat controls and mechanism was $12,000. The final invoice for all work done was $77,346.45 at 13,778 miles.
