We are pleased to offer 1984 Ferrari 512 BBi s/n 51339, sold new to Steve Barney, owner of Foreign Cars Italia, the Authorized Ferrari Dealer for Greensboro, N.C., picked up at the Factory on 05 June, 1984 and then driven by Steve Barney and Gerald Roush, editor of the Ferrari Market Letter (and with three other new Boxer owners), on a 600 mile trip to the Frankfurst airport to ship the cars back to the US, before continuing their “tourist tour” of Europe. 512 BBi s/n 51339 was then imported into the US and legalized to US EPA and DOT specs by Amerispec, then owned by Dick Fritz, the team manager of the NART race team. From new in Rosso Corsa FER/300 (Ferrari red) with beige leather and a beige dash and complete back to the warranty card in Steve Barney’s name and copies of the Ferrari Market Letter three-page column on picking up 512 BBi s/n 51339 (and the three other Boxers) at the Factory. When first introduced as the successor to the front-engined Daytona, at the Geneva Motor show in 1972, the Boxer represented a remarkable evolution as Ferrari’s first mid-engined flagship. As Ferraris response to Lamborghini’s stunning Miura, the Boxer did not disappoint, with the 4.4 and later 5-liter, horizontally opposed, twelve-cylinder engine longitudinally mounted in line with the transmission, giving the Boxer a low center of gravity, near the center of mass, with acres of torque and great drive-ability. Clothed in suitably rakish bodywork by Pininfarina, the Boxer was a stunner, with the 512 BBi representing the ultimate development of the Boxer line, thanks to the introduction of Bosch fuel injection, to aid both low-end torque and emissions compliance. Today, the Boxer remains a dramatic and exciting car that is both firm and solid yet not overly demanding to drive.

512 BBi s/n 51339 has been in California since 1993, has had only one long-term-owner since 1994, is California plated and registered and is amazingly well documented with service invoices back to the owner’s purchase in 1994! Only two years ago, in
2018, 512 BBi s/n 51339 was treated to an engine-out, top-end rebuild by Steve Maxwell Exotic Car Service, 8494 Commerce Ave., San Diego. The valves were done with all new intake and exhaust valves, all new valve guides, all new fuel injectors, a rebuild distributor, a new distributor cap and rotor, a rebuilt water pump, all new engine compartment hoses and the cam covers, oil tank and air filter boxes were powder coated. The A/C system was converted to a much more efficient rotary compressor and the transaxle was inspected, needing only a new shift bushing and shaft seal. All new engine gasket set, engine bay hoses and new rear hood shocks were supplied and installed. The engine bay and engine components were cleaned, paint and detailed and a new battery was installed. The total invoice was $21,651.00 and sublet machine work was $1,799.00 at 34,844 miles. We have all invoices and photo documentation on file. Only last year, 512 BBi s/n 51339 was service by Dugan Enterprises, Oceanside, CA. New engine oil lines were installed, the engine vacuum was checked, the A/C was charged and the fuel injection was adjusted for emissions testing. The total invoice was $4,523.18 at 35,792 miles. The electrical system, headlights, fog lights and main lights switch were repaired, the total invoice was $5,352.72 at 35,792 miles. We have the invoices on file.

512 BBi s/n 51339 is cosmetically excellent, the body is straight and dent-free with excellent panel gaps and fit. There is minor road rash on the front spoiler and some minor paint crazing on the rear lid from engine heat. The wheels are in very nice condition and are mounted on a like-new set of Michelin TRX 240/55 VR 514 tires. All lights, lenses and emblems are in excellent condition and the under-body, chassis and floor pan are all in excellent condition. The interior is all original and in excellent condition, considering that it is 36-years old. The dashboard is in excellent with no shrinkage as it has had a soft throw-cover on it whenever in the sun. The instruments and controls are excellent, as is the headliner. The original Pioneer Am/FM Casette stereo and equalizer are still in place. The carpets are in very good condition as they have had throw carpets protecting them. The engine compartment is exceptionally clean and nicely detailed, thanks to the recent engine-out top-end rebuild and detail. The plating on most of the metal components has been renewed, and the painted items such as the intake runners and air boxes have all been painted or powder coated. The front compartment is also very tidy. The windscreen washer reservoir appears to be new, and the spare tire well liner and cover are still in place. The correct and original thin-line spare wheel and tire are in place. The underside of the deck lid is in good shape. The undercarriage and belly pan are structurally excellent, undamaged and in excellent condtion for a car 36-years old. The engine is dry and the suspension arms and componentes are all in good shape.

The car runs and drives well. The engine starts immediately and runs smoothly, making a unique and pleasurable flat-12 sound which is actually relatively quiet at low speeds or around town. The 5-liter flat-12 pulls cleanly, makes great power and has acres of torque. The transmission shifts well, including second gear, although the clutch is not very progressive, a feature of today’s Boxer clutch replacements. The chassis is tight but compliant and the brakes are both powerful and effective. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a wonderfully documented, California registered and titled Boxer that has spent almost all of its life in California. A cosmetically attractive example that’s a user-friendly Ferrari thanks to its extensive service history and recent top-end valve job and fuel injection rebuild. It is complete with the tool roll, the tools, the leather tool roll carrying bag, the jack bag, the jack and accessories, the owner’s pouch, the books and the original warranty card and all service records dating back to 1994 to support the thorough maintenance regime the car has enjoyed. 512 BBi s/n 51339 is one of the very last 512 BBis built, is user-friendly, market-correctly-priced and a pride of ownership Ferrari.
