We are pleased to offer 1988 Ferrari F1 Tipo 639 s/n 106, the second of only two Factory Tipo 639 F1 Factory prototype and test cars built for the FISA’s 1989 3.5 Litre atmospheric formula, banishing the earlier turbo F1 cars to the dustbin of racing history. F1 Tipo 639 s/n 106 was used to test Ferrari’s all-new Tipo 035, 3.5 litre V12 engine which produced 685 bhp at 13,000 rpm and was also the first Ferrari F1 car with today’s ubiquitous “paddle shifters”. Ferrari Tipo 639 s/n 106 was retained by the Factory from 1988 to April, 1999 and was then sold by Ferrari SPA to the first and only owner, in Reggio Emilia, Italy and so is a one-owner Ferrari F1 car!

The Tipo 639 was designed by John Barnard, credited with both the introduction of the revolutionary seven-speed semi-automatic F-1 paddle shifter gearbox and the carbon fiber composite chassis. Barnard, who had joined Ferrari from McLaren at the end of the 1986 season, had begun designing the car in 1987 with the intent of competing in the 1988 season. However, continual problems with the 639 and later 640’s revolutionary semi-automatic gearbox saw the team forced to use the turbocharged F1/87/88C in 1988, with the 639 and 640 debut pushed back to 1989, the first year of FISA’s 3.5 Litre atmospheric only formula. The all-new semi-automatic gearbox was initially problematic but the problem proved to be a lack of battery power which was resolved in mid-1989 by the electrical experts from Magneti Marelli. The development work and testing program for F1 Tipo 639 s/n 106 was conducted at Ferrari’s private test track Fiorano by Factory drivers Nigel Mansell, Gerhard Berger and test driver Roberto Moreno during 1988 and into 1989. Indeed, the seat in s/n 106 is signed and dated 22 Jan., 1989 by Mansell.

F1 Tipo 639 s/n 106 offers the serious collector the ultimate centerpiece for a great Ferrari collection or the opportunity to join Ferrari’s Corse Clienti Program and interact with Ferrari’s dedicated team of engineers and race mechanics, to insure historic F1 performance to its full potential, at a performance level comfortable to the driver–owner! The Ferrari Corse Clienti Program provides full support to Ferrari F1 owners to drive their machines at select events with full factory technical support, operating as a special section within Corse Clienti (Customer Racing), and offers both collectors and driver–owners the prized opportunity to be invited into the inner circle of Ferrari’s racing history. The F1 Clienti events are non–competitive, but are guaranteed to thrill drivers and spectators alike at famous venues such as Spa, Nürburgring, Donington and Magny Cours.

The long term and only owner, a true enthusiast, has owned F1 tipo 639 s/n 106 for sixteen years and over the years has also owned F1 tipo 91 s/n 129 and F1 tipo F300 s/n 183. Ferrari F1 Tipo 639 s/n 106 is fully functional, has always been serviced by Ferrari Classiche and is in working order. Tipo 639 s/n 106 is fitted with the original factory supplied and certified engine Tipo 035/5 # 20 and 7-speed F1 shifting transaxle Tipo 639 # 5 and comes with the factory sales agreement and invoices for the original purchase and for all work and updates of the car. Like any Formula One car, F1 tipo 639 s/n 106 would require a factory race prep, safety inspection and the latest updates to be race ready.

As a significant part of Ferrari’s evolutionary history, the sister car and only other F1 Tipo 639, s/n 105, was the Factory F1 show car introducing the all-new carbon fiber chassis, the all-new Tipo 035/5 engine and the all-new 7-speed F1 transaxle from 01 to 10 Dec., 1989 at the 22nd International Motor Show, Essen, Germany. The sister car, s/n 105 has been on display at the Ferrari Museum, the Galleria Ferrari in Modena since April of 1990. As the only Tipo 639 in private hands, Ferrari F1 Tipo 639 s/n 106 is offered with the original “paddle shifter” steering wheel; a spare “paddle shifter” steering wheel; the box with battery for starting; the original electrical starter; the front and rear jacks; a spare set of the original Speedline wheels and the factory supplied and custom fitted car cover as a ready to show package.

As a “valve spring” car, F1 Tipo 639 s/n 106 does not need the ultra-high pressure valve train air tank which must be recharged before every run and is the last of the user-friendly F1 Ferraris that can be used without a laptop and a small army of engineers. We can arrange to have F1 Tipo 639 s/n 106 inspected by Ferrari Factory trained F1 team mechanics as part of the purchase price. F1 Tipo 639 s/n 106 has its Certificato di Autenticita issued by Ferrari Classiche and is also Classiche certified and comes with the Classiche “Red Book”.
