We are please to offer a Bob Norwood built 412P Replica s/n 00768, a Ferrari Sport Prototype racer made famous by Hollywood! If you’re a “car guy” you have watched the Ford Versus Ferrari Movie, staring Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby and Christian Bale as Ken Miles and their battle to beat Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966. Ford won, with three Ford GT40s crossing the finish line in formation. Needless to say Enzo was not pleased and came back with a vengeance, winning the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, crossing the finish line in formation with 330 P4 s/n 846 in 1st, 330 P4 s/n 856 in 2nd and the NART entered 412P s/n 844 in 3rd. For the 1967 season Ford’s main focus was a repeat win at Le Mans in 1967, but thanks to the 330 P4s and 412Ps full season results, Ferrari was able to win the 1967 International Championship for Sports Prototypes.
412 P replica s/n 00768 was the very first 412P replica built by Bob Norwood in early 1982 and the only 1967 412P replica built using an all-Ferrari 12 cylinder chassis, brakes, suspension, engine and transaxle. 412 P replica s/n 00768 began life as 365 GT4/BB s/n 18135 and was sold new into England and first registered on 05 Nov., 1974 but was crashed and written off with a few month. In 1975 the wreck was sold as a project car by Cobb Motors to Robert L. Thurman, an American living in Buckhurst Hill, England. Rob Thurman then bought an alloy P/3 front and rear body from David Piper and was going to fit the P/3 body to the Boxer chassis, but like so many projects it was started but never completed. In 1981 the unfinished project was shipped from England to Rob Thurman’s home in Texas with the David Piper supplied new-old-stock P/3 front and rear body sections. In early 1982 Bob Norwood shortened the 365 BB frame from 98.8 inches to 94.8 inches, almost identical to the 412Ps 94.5 inches. The now-shortened 365 BB wheelbase was one inch wider on the front and a full seven inches wider in the rear to accommodate the BB Flat-12 engine. The original David Piper supplied alloy nose and tail were used as bucks to make the slightly wider front and much wider rear body section in fiberglass. New semi-monocoque fuel tanks were protected by .070 inch T-6 Aluminum belly pans. A 512 BB engine # 00768 replaced the smaller 365 BB engine and a 512BB transaxle # 781 replaced the problematic 365 BB transaxle.
As the first 1967 412P Replica built s/n 00768 drew much attention and was featured in 1982 on the cover of Petersen’s Sports Car Classics #2 and on pages 48-49-50 and 51. We have copies on file. Once completed s/n 00768 was delivered to Don Walker, Founder of the Dallas Grand Prix Formula One race and was seen on Display at the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix. S/n 00768 next went to Lord Brockett, who needs no introduction, and was registered on English plates XBY 166F. In April 1997 s/n 00768 was sold at the Brooks Olympia Auctionto Lionel Bal in Belgium before going to Al Bahoric, owner of the Hobbit Incorporated, Fayetteville North Carolina on 04 June 2007.
As the only Norwood 412P replica built using an all-Ferrari 12 cylinder chassis, brakes, suspension, engine and transaxle s/n 00768 is unique with a rigid and integrated Ferrari frame and suspension that puts massive amounts of rubber on the ground thanks to the 10 x 15 front and 13 x 15 rear Campagnolo wheels mounted with 23/59R 15 front and 29/61R 15 rear Michelin TB5R Racing rubber. Power comes from a carburated 512 BB engine # 00768 and is put to the ground through a 512 BB transaxle #F102BB n 781. 412 P replica s/n 00768 was put on a serious diet and as per the article in Sports Car Classics weighed in at a mere 1588 lbs, less than half
the weight of a 512 BB which weights in at well over 3,000 lbs, making for a staggering weight-to-power ratio! Steering is Go-Kart quick and easy, acceleration is awesome and the brakes, meant to slow down a 3,000 lb plus Boxer haul 412P Replica s/n 00768 down from speed as if an anchor had been dropped!
412P Replica s/n 00768 features good cosmetics when one accepts that the paint was done to race car standards, although a close inspection reveals the expected road chips, especially to the lower front nose and minor paint cracking from fiberglass panel flex with a few other minor scratches and chips around the car. The lights are in good shape and the car is equipped with headlights and turn signals, which should make it legal to street register in many states. The glazing is Plexiglas and is in good shape overall, with minor surface scratches. The rear lamps are Carello units from a production Ferrari road car. The interior is very Spartan and functional, with little upholstery. The dashboard is black wrinkle finished while the floors are fitted with rubber mats. The form-fitting lay-down seats have black upholstery with four point Willans racing seat belts and the seats will accommodate the tallest driver. The sills are also upholstered, which is appreciated during ingress and egress thanks to the wide sills. The steering wheel is the famous and iconic Momo Prototipo, while there is a full complement of instruments that provide much information, although no speedometer is fitted. The overall feeling is overwhelmingly functional and business like, rather than being a showplace. The engine compartment is extremely impressive, with six Webers and fully visible drive train and rear suspension.
