We are pleased to offer 1966 Jaguar XK-E Fixed Head coupe s/n 1E31236, a two-owner, time-warp “preservation” car. XK-E s/n 1E31236 is a rust-free and damage-free California and Arizona car since new and comes with what we believe is every piece of paperwork since new, starting with the original window sticker and the original bill of sale for $6,008.00, out the showroom door of Whittlesey Motors Inc., Torrance California. The voluminous paperwork going back to pre-delivery, forty-nine years of detailed sales and service invoices and other paperwork from new, make for an extremely well documented four inch thick service and ownership history. XK-E s/n 1E31236 also comes with the amazingly well preserved owner’s handbook, plastic carrying case, sales brochure, warranty book, periodic maintenance vouchers with all the selling dealer stampings, the chrome plate pamphlet, the steering lock pamphlet, the overseas dealers listing book and the fold-out Jaguar 4.2 ‘E’ Type maintenance chart. Also comes with the original California “Black Plates” and the current Arizona plates. XK-E s/n 1E31236 also comes with the original jack, brass hammer, lube gun and leather carrying case plus the original leather tool roll and tools. Comes with a new exhaust system and exhaust header pipes (not installed). Has the spare wheel and tire. All matching numbers, of course.
An estate sale car, not driven for the last five years, XK-E s/n 1E31236 has just been serviced by Historic Race Engineering, Costa Mesa, and has had all three SU Carbs rebuilt and is fitted with a new brake power booster, a new brake master cylinder, new brake soft lines and rebuilt front brake calipers. The complete fuel tank and fuel pump were both replaced and a new clutch master cylinder was fitted. Total invoice was $4,863.32. This is a wonderfully driving XK-E, the syncros work smoothly, the clutch is light to use, grips quickly and performance is excellent throughout the RPM range, thanks to the impressive torque of the very well-tuned 4.2 liter twin-cam engine. The underside is straight, solid and remarkably dry. All old and current invoices are on file.
The E-Type was unveiled in March of 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show and was an immediate sensation: its specifications were then state of the art, its bodywork was simply gorgeous and the price surprisingly affordable, making the E-Type a legendary part of automotive history. Jaguar’s Le Mans winning racing heritage was obvious with independent suspension all around (at a time when Ferrari still used solid rear axles), disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and of course Jaguar’s legendary twin cam inline-6. The cars were continuously developed, including the adaptation of the 4.2 liter engine and synchromesh transmission. However, the arrival of American safety legislation, and the twelve cylinder engine, made later XK-Es less attractive and less sporting, making the covered headlight, all syncro 4.2 liter coupes and convertibles the pick of the litter. Traditionally, the open top XK-Es have been worth more than coupes, but in recent years the more dramatic styling, improved rigidity and increased practicality of the coupes has meant that values of the closed cars have doubled in only the last few years.
XK-E s/n 1E31236 has an older repaint in its original color to a standard that was consistent with the car’s value at the time. There are some surface blemishes, a few chips and scratches and some overspray. The luster is good, however, and the body panel fit on the hood, doors and rear hatch are very good. There is no corrosion or old body damage. The chrome varies in condition from very good in some areas to signs of aging in others. The window trims are quite nice, while the bumpers have light pitting. The wheels show signs of aging, while the glass and lamps are in good shape.
The interior is original, unrestored and very well-preserved. The leather on the seats is in excellent condition, being almost fifty years old. The dashboard is in very good condition and the instruments are excellent, as is the headliner. The carpets are in very good shape, and the control switches are in excellent condition. The rear compartment is in good condition. The engine compartment has been given a quick cleanup but has never been restored, and would respond well to an ambitious detailing. All under-hood components are correct and unmolested, and it even has the original window washer bottle. The car drives and works well, though a precautionary service of the cooling system is advised. New-old-stock cooling hoses, a tune-up kit with a distributor cap, ignition rotor, ignition points and wiper blades are with the car.
As a covered headlight, all synromesh 4.2 liter, XK-E s/n 1E31236 shows the elegant body lines, user-friendly interior and seamless power of the early cars, plus the smooth shifting full synchro transmission, negative ground alternator driven electrical system and the more comfortable adjustable seats of the later cars. 1966 Jaguar XK-E Fixed Head Coupe s/n 1E31236 is truly unique, as it comes with every piece of paper since new, from the original window sticker and original sales invoice to every service and repair bill for the last forty-nine years! XK-E s/n 1E31236 also comes with the owner’s handbook, carrying case, sales brochure, warranty book, periodic maintenance vouchers, the chrome plate and steering lock pamphlet, the overseas dealers listing book and the fold-out Jaguar 4.2 ‘E’ Type maintenance chart. Also comes with the original California “Black Plates” and the current Arizona plates. XK-E s/n 1E31236 comes with the original jack, brass hammer, lube gun and leather carrying case, plus the original leather tool roll and tools and the period correct wind deflectors.
In the world of collector cars there are “good stories” and “bad stories”, and XK-E s/n 1E31236 hits all the “good stories” buttons and checklist! Additionally, these cars are only “all original once”, and XK-E s/n 1E31236 generally qualifies making it an excellent example of the very best pride of ownership preservation cars. Add in the timeless styling, low cost (in our world of Ferraris) and the low maintenance costs of a 4.2 litre 6-cylinder, and XK-E s/n 1E31236 offers massive bang for the buck from the best of the pre-smog, covered headlight 1960s exotics.
