We are pleased to offer 1968 Alfa Romeo GTA 1300 Junior Stradale s/n 775946, an extremely nice, alloy-bodied, lightweight street version of Alfa Romeo’s all-dominating FIA Group 2 touring car. Introduced in February of 1965, the Alfa Romeo GTA dominated and won the first seven places in the first round of the 1966 European Touring Car Challenge and won both the 1966 Constructors’ and the Drivers’ Championships in its first full season. Conceived as a GT class-beater by Carlo Chiti, head of Alfa Romeo’s Autodelta racing division, the ‘A’ in GTA stands for alleggerita or ‘lightened’ and all GTAs were built by Autodelta. The GTA race cars won the European GT Championship 7 years in a row and won the 1970 SCCA Trans Am under-2 liter championship in the US as a 2.0 liter. The GTA 1300 Junior variation was introduced in 1968 to compete in the new under-1,300-cc class with 300 Alfa GTA Jr. race cars and only 193 Alfa GTA Jr. Stradales built.

Weight savings came from an aluminum outer body that was bonded and riveted to a standard steel shell bringing the GTAs and GTA Jrs. weight down from 2200 to 1630 lbs. Under the hood was a new de-stroked twin plug 1,290 cc DOHC four-cylinder engine with two 45 DCOE Weber carburetors backed up by a five-speed gearbox and four-wheel ATE disc brakes. Built to compete against the Mini Cooper S, the short-stroke GTA Jr’s 1300 cc engine produced 163 hp with Autodelta’s special fuel injection. Each engine was built by a single mechanic at the Autodelta facility.

GTA 1300 Junior Stradale s/n 775946 is a rare matching-numbers example that apparently has had only three long-term owners from new and has only 7,486 miles (12,407 kilometers) showing on the odometer. It was completed in late 1968 and registered to its original owner in Florence, Italy in 1969, staying with its original owner until 1995. It was next registered to Yuki Kakishima, the chief priest of Bukkakuji Temple in Yamanashi, who owned the Alfa from 1996 until it came to the US in 2004. In 2005-2006 it was given a sympathetic restoration with a suspension and mechanical service at $3,868.65; an engine-out service and transmission overhaul at $5,044.00 and a brake overhaul at $1,663.71. Mechanicals were done by Alfa Performance Connection, Orange CA. Hot Rods and Hobbies in Torrance, CA completed a strip and paint at $21,461.94 and an engine compartment detailing and plating at $3,207.50. The Alfa Corsa decals were duplicated by Molly Designs in Costa Mesa CA at $1,215.07. In 2006 Hot Rods and Hobbies in Torrance, CA completed plating and engine detail work at $4,336.24, paint detail work at $4,357.50, color sanding and assembly work at $2,414.96 plus wiring and final assembly work for $894.38. The total parts and restoration work was $49,969.57. It remained with its long-term US owner, Bill Reinert, in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA from 2005 to 2013. In 2015 new twin 45 DCOE Weber carbs were purchased, jetted and setup by Mike Pierce of Pierce Manifolds in Gilroy, CA at a cost of $871.69. Comes with the original take-off shocks, carbs and the original steering wheel.

This Junior Stradale has been well-maintained by each of its owners throughout its life. It was set up in fast, road going configuration and is still equipped with its original numbers-matching 1,300-cc engine. The engine has benefited from a service and new 45 DCOE Weber carburetors, the ATE disc brakes were rebuilt and the car was treated to a new clutch and Koni shock absorbers. While this GTA Jr was originally delivered in Hawthorn White, it was refinished in 2005-2006 in the signature Rosso Alfa red with period-correct Autodelta livery and features the Quadrifoglio, the hood serpent and a white stripe running along both sides. The interior, including the rare and desirable sling back seats, the dash, upholstery, and headliner are unblemished and it is still fitted with its very rare lightweight polished aluminum bumpers. Alfa GTA Jr. s/n 775946 comes with the original “Centro Documentazione Alfa Romeo” build confirmation documents and translations of all Japanese ownership documents plus all American service and restoration invoices, the original jack and the jack kit.

The GTA is the last of the late 1960s and early 1970s race-bred and championship proven, pre-bumper, pre-smog cars making it a well-balanced, user-friendly collector car. They were astronomically expensive when new owing to their exotic and labor-intensive construction. Any buyer needed to have a certain level of factory connection in order to buy a new GTA Stradale. This very rare and desirable 1300 Stradale comes with the owner’s manual, a 1300 GTA supplement and a technical shop manual. Few complete and original examples exist today, and those that do have seen a dramatic increase in value due to their scarcity. This particular car is an outstanding opportunity to acquire a genuine GTA Stradale that is suitable for both vintage racing and street use. Cosmetically crisp and fresh in appearance.
