We are pleased to offer 1978 US model carburated 308 GTB s/n 25677, a one-owner, all-original, 23,361 mile, multiple class winning and platinum winning, Grigio Chiaro 133-k-31 over Nero leather 308 GTB with truly amazing documentation. When introduced in October of 1975 at the Paris Auto Salon, the Pininfarina designed 308 GTB was an elegant replacement for the much-missed 246 GT. Thanks to the lines penned by Pininfarina designer Leonardo Fioravanti, the 308 GTB continued the aggressive yet curvaceous and exotic lines shown in Fioravanti’s earlier 206 and 246 GT, 365 GTB/4 Daytona and 365 BB Berlinetta Boxer designs. As a replacement for the 246 GT, the 308 GTB was the first of Ferrari’s higher-volume, smaller-engine, user-friendly V-8 exotics, meant to appeal to a larger market than the flagship V-12s, and the first of the long line of V8 Ferraris that have evolved into Ferrari’s massive ongoing commercial success.
This beautifully carburated 308 GTB is unusually well documented back to the original (not a copy) sales document from Chinetti-Garthwaite Imports, Inc., to their sub-distributor, Atlantic Import Cars Ltd, 78-88 Prospect Street, Cambridge, MA, 02139, with a suggested total retail price of $36,475. 308 GTB s/n 25677 was then sold by Bremen Automotive, an Alfa, Romeo, BMW, Fiat and Mazda dealer, to Philip and Lucy Fleming, the first and only owners, on 28 April, 1979 for $37,335, as documented by the Bremen Automotive original (not a copy) BiIl of Sale. Further documentation includes the original Warranty Book & Card listing the sale by Atlantic Imported Cars to Philip and Lucy Fleming, the original (not copies) State Farm insurance binder, New Jersey dealer’s registration application and the May 8, 1979 New Jersey registration card. Also included is a list prepared by Phil Fleming that documents forty plus years of Concours d’ Elegance events, with the dates and the placing at thirty-six Ferrari Club of America National and local events plus several dozen rallys, parades and a museum exhibit.
While there are far too many service documents to list, some of the more relevant start with the 1,500 mile inspection by Wide World of Cars in Spring Valley, NY on 01 April, 1980. Next is a 7,500 mile service by Wide World of Cars on 06 Aug., 1983 followed by a cam belt service by Wide World of Cars at 9,856 miles on 17 June 1985. Four years later, on 11 Aug., 1989 a routine service was done by Wide World of Cars at 15,456 miles. Another cam belt service was done by Sport Auto in Gaylordsville, CT on 25 April, 2001 at 21,057 miles. Another cam belt service was done by Exoticars in Frenchtown, NJ on 04 Aug., 2009 at 22,036 mile followed by a routine service by Exoticars on 09 April, 2013 at 22,322 miles. A window mechanism was repaired by Exoticars on 09 April, 2014 followed by a final cam belt service by WM Thomas Roadsters in Frenchtown, NJ, on 19 Nov., 2015. The last service documentation was for carb linkage by WM Thomas Roadsters on 02 Dec., 2020 at 23,075 miles. Also included are recent letters from Phil Fleming detailing the service history, lists of Concours d’ Elegance events entered with the placing results and his decision to sell, at the age of 82.
Needless to say 1978 308 GTB s/n 25677 redefines a long term, one-owner, pride of ownership, well documented and ready to show survivor. Cosmetically the all-original forty-four year old paint shows extremely well but under close examination is just starting to craze, while the body is amazingly dent-free and ripple-free, which is remarkable, considering the s/n 25677 is forty-four years old. All panels have excellent gaps and fit. All of the black anodized window trim finish shows as-new! Thanks to the early 308s clever door latches, the doors open and shut with a finger light touch and the front hood and deck lid open and close with ease with none of the usual pressure dents on the rear edge of the engine lid. The original “California” driver’s side mirror is in place. The window glass, black rubber bumpers, lights and lens all show as-new. The black leather interior upholstery, dash, headliner and interior trim and carpets are in excellent condition with no hardening on the seat leather or undue wear on the seat bolsters. The engine bay and the under panels, belly pan and suspension are in good condition. All original smog equipment is in place and working!
S/n 25677 comes with its full set of original show-quality books, with their original pouch, the correct original warranty card, the full set of tools with their bag, the jack kit with the jack, lug wrench, and accessory belts plus the fuse and light holder with all fuses, bulbs and spark plug plus the small, plug-in trouble light with it’s carrying bag, again, all in show-quality condition. The Blaupunkt stereo cassette radio is original and comes with it’s owner’s manual and the ultra-rare cassette operational card. The rare Salchi paint sticker is in place and carries the hand-written Grigio Chiaro 133-k-31 paint code. This Berlinetta is ready to be shown at Ferrari Club of America events where it should be an easy winner in the survivor class, driven to weekend Cars & Coffee gatherings, or as a pride of ownership in the owners garage. 308 GTB s/n 25677 must be seen to be fully appreciated, it is truly an ideal candidate for the serious Ferrari enthusiast seeking the most desirable iteration of the steel-bodied carburated 308 GTB. Even better, s/n 25677 starts instantly, idles like a 40 pound tomcat, runs well, drives well, goes through the gears easily and stops straight. With only 23,361 mile over 44 years s/n 25677 has driven only 531 miles per year, on average. Today she is ready-to-go for an owner who wants to experience it to the fullest on the show field, on the open road or simple admire in his garage. It is priced to sell at $129,500 or best offer.
