We are pleased to offer 1987 USA model Porsche 3.3 Liter 930 Turbo s/n 50302. Introduced to the public at the Paris Auto show in October, 1974, the 911 based Turbo was originally intended to be a limited-run “Homologation Special” to homologate the 911-bodyshape for FIA GT racing with turbo-power, internally numbered as a 930 by Porsche to differentiate them from the standard 911. 930 Turbo street car production began in the spring of 1975, and US production began in 1976. Demand was much stronger than expected, and the 930 quickly became a cult road car, thanks to the turbo-technology from the wildly successful Porsche 917/30 CAN-AM car. The Factory’ 1976 advertising slogan for the 930 said it all: “Exclusive. Explosive. Expensive.” Initially available as a non-intercooled 3.0 liter, the 1978 model year saw the introduction of a more powerful 3.3 liter KKK-turbo intercooled engine, much improved brakes, 16″ x 7″ Fuchs front wheels with larger 16″ x 9″ Fuchs rear wheels mounted with 225 x 55 R 16 front tires and what was, at the time, outrageous rear flairs covering the 245 x 45 R 16 rear tires. The Turbo was finished off with a “Tea Tray” rear spoiler to help vent more air to the intercooler and engine while giving substantially more rear downforce. Additionally, the many evolutionary updates such as integral fog lights and upgraded interiors fitted to the SC and the Carrera 3.2 were added to the 3.3 liter 930s. The combination gave the 930 a distinctive, purposeful, and aggressive presence that was immortalized as countless high schooler and college dorm walls posters.
By 1980, draconian US emissions laws ended sale of the 930 in the North American market. It was not until the 1986 model year when the incorporation of an oxygen sensor, electronic assistance for the mechanical fuel injection system and a three-way catalytic converter permitted the 930’s return to the US with 282 HP, giving a 0-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 278 km/h or 172 mph! As the Factory’s flagship, the 930 combined luxury with performance making the 930 a luxurious and refined car meant to effortlessly cover great distance at high speed. Power windows, user-friendly A/C and form-fitting leather covered Sport Seats were mated with high-performance turbocharging. The Flagship 930 was the top-of-the-range 911 model and remained the top-of-line throughout its entire production duration. Power was put to the ground through a revised suspension and the 16 x 7 wide front and 16 x 9 rear Fuchs wheels covered by the wide factory flared wheel arches increase the 911’s width; grip and road-holding. Braking was taken care of by 11.97″ front and 12.17″ rear vented disc brakes, and power was delivered through an unbreakable 4-speed gearbox. Weight was a mere 2,866 lbs.
930 Turbo s/n 50302 was sold new on 13 January, 1987 by Franz Slep, a salesman at Dave Strong Porsche Audi, Salt Lake City, Utah to Arnold Forde, Salt Lake City. Over the last twenty-one years, 930 Turbo s/n 50302 has been driven 82,479 miles for an average of just under 4,000 miles per year. Cosmetically, the car makes a strong initial impression. The paintwork is glossy and is of high quality, and the body is straight with excellent panel fit. When new, every 930 body panel was given an ID tag which matched the VIN, and every panel on 930 Turbo s/n 50302 has the correct VIN tag confirming that every body panel is original. With 82,479 miles, there are multiple chips and scratches and several small rock dents in the front hood which do not show in photos. There is also a small dent in the right rear fender just above the tail light, and some chips that have been touched up. The Factory wheels need to be refinished. There are no mechanical or body modifications. All paintwork is original other than the left rear quarter panel. The driver’s side mirror glass has also been replaced.
The interior is in acceptable condition and is unmodified aside from the steering wheel and an aftermarket stereo. The leather is in good condition throughout for a car with 82,479 miles, as are the carpets, and the interior appears to be entirely original. The dashboard is excellent with no cracks or warping, and the switches, controls, and instruments are in good original condition. The driver’s and passenger’s door seals have passed their due date, a common wear item that can easily be replaced. 930 Turbo s/n 50302 was ordered from new with options # 383 (left side Sport seat) and # 387 (right side Sport seat) in Mahogany leather with option # 158, a Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46 radio and option # 533, a Factory installed alarm. The steering wheel needs to be re-covered in new leather.
The engine compartment and the trunk are as one would expect on a Porsche with 82,479 miles and would benefit from a thorough detail. The correct spare is in place and appears to be the original supplied to the car. The car runs and drives well. The motor pulls with the famous 930 ferocity once the engine speed passes 3500rpm and we welcome a pre-purchase inspection. The gearbox shifts well, with slop free operation and a positive and confidence inspiring feel to the clutch. The underbody shows no sign of damage or corrosion and is very clean considering the mileage. 930 Turbo s/n 50302 offers a great user-friendly driver-quality Porsche that would benefit greatly from a patient and thorough detail. 930 Turbo s/n 50302 is coming from seven years of storage and an estate sale and so is fundamentally unmodified, which is increasingly difficult to find as many of these cars were altered in various ways over the years. The car comes with the original sales card listing the options, selling dealer and first owner in the stamped maintenance book.
1987 Porsche 3.3 Liter 930 Turbo s/n 50302 is matching-numbers, all body tags intact example from new in Grand Prix White (code # 908) with Mahogany leather color combination it wears today. The body and paint are in good condition considering their age and mileage, all panel fit is as-new, the interior, the dash and all glass and trim is in acceptable condition. The A/C blows cold, the windows and door locks all work correctly, making for an overall driving experience that reinforces why these cars are legendary: solid, balanced, and above all, communicative, relatively affordable and overlooked by collectors for many years. These early 930s are rapidly emerging as collectible cars thanks to their iconic styling, innovative technology and direct connection to some of Porsche’s most successful race cars, which by extension, means some of the most successful race cars of all time. Indeed, the 930’s massive performance put Porsche into the Supercar status for the first time.
