We are pleased to offer 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C Gran Sport 1750 supercharged Castagna Cabriolet, a very attractive and event-friendly 6C 1750 GS, chassis no. 121215033, with matching engine # 121215033. The 3rd of only 71 Sixth Series Alfa Romeo 6Cs built, so a very late production sixth-series supercharged car believed to have been delivered new to Germany, fitted from new with very attractive Castagna Cabriolet coachworks. After WWII the car was purchased in Berlin and brought to England. Sold in 1959 to Mr. Ken Koupal, an industrial designer. When Mr. Koupal moved to the United States he brought chassis 121215033 with him and began the restoration but eventually moved back to Europe with this Alfa 6C 1750 in its unrestored condition. In the mid-1990s Alfa 6C 1750 s/n 121215033 was sold to Dr. Bruno Lafourcade of France and restored from a bare frame up in 2003-2009 in France. We have extensive copies of the restoration paperwork.
The Alfa Romeo 6C series owes its racing heritage and competition success to Vittorio Jano who first designed the 1925 world championship winning 8C P2 Alfa Romeo Grand Prix cars. Jano next designed the 6C 1752 cc twin overhead-camshaft supercharger inline six-cylinder engine using the same light alloy construction, hemispherical combustion chambers, centrally located spark plugs, two rows of overhead valves per cylinder bank and dual overhead cams. Introduced in 1929, the 6C 1750 was offered in three models: a single overhead cam Turismo with 122-inch wheelbase and a maximum speed of about 110 km/h; the twin overhead cam Gran Turismo with 108-inch or 114-inch wheelbase and a top speed of about 130 km/h; and the Gran Sport or Super Sport, a supercharged Gran Turismo producing 85 hp and a top speed of 150 km/h. Regardless of the version, the Alfa Romeo 6C remains today one of the most compelling and desirable of all Alfas. All told, Alfa Romeo built a total of only 2,579 1750s from 1929 through to 1933, of which very few were supercharged “GS” examples and only 71 were the most refined Sixth Series cars.
Alfa 6C 1750 supercharged Gran Sport Castagna Cabriolet s/n 121215033 is RHD like almost all pre-war Alfas. Finished in an elegant gloss black with dark red accents with dark red leather and black carpets. Has an easy-to-raise-or-lower black cabriolet top and an opening-folding windshield for sunny summer Italian motoring. Also fitted with a radiator stoneguard, trafficators and nicely integrated rear-mounted single or dual spare wheel and tire. A single spare is currently mounted. The Castagna body shows its elegance well both top-up and top-down. Alfa 6C 1750 supercharged Gran Sport s/n 121215033 is one of the last 6C 1750 examples ever built by Alfa Romeo and so engine and chassis were both refined and tweaked to their limits. This outstanding example has its original matching numbers engine and chassis and has a well-documented ownership history listing every owner back to the mid-1950s in England. Like all supercharged Alfas the engine is a work of machinists art with its alloy block and alloy ribbed supercharger, air intake and steering box. The interior is in very good condition with excellent leather seats and door panels. The wood trim is in excellent restored condition, as are the instruments. The overall condition shows the patina of a nicely maintained ten-year-old restoration, an all-weather friendly and well-sorted pre-war Alfa that is light and pleasant to use. Will cruise comfortably at today’s freeway speeds.
Having personally done the Mille Miglia three times in three different Ferraris, we fully appreciated the value of an easy to use cabriolet top, a full windshield, roll-up side windows and wipers on cold and rainy Italian days. FIVA paperwork in process. This supercharged Alfa 6C is an ideal entrant for any of the world’s myriad classic car driving events, with the stunning looks reminiscent of an Alfa Romeo 8C .
