We are pleased to offer 1965 275 GTB s/n 6787 GT, a nicely restored and ready to enjoy example of Ferraris 1965 Flagship V12. Introduced at the 1964 Paris Auto Show, the 275 GTB was significant evolved from the 250 GT Lusso it replaced. Styling was more aggressive, and the 275 GTB was mechanically much more sophisticated. A four-wheel fully independent suspension offered improved handling and was a first on a road-going Ferrari while a rear-mounted 5-speed transaxle offered a needed extra gear, giving better gear ratios and better weight distribution. Add in a larger and more powerful 3.3 liter V12 meant that the 275 GTB was a markedly faster and more capable car than any other mainstream road going Ferrari before it. Stunning good looks ads to the overall package.
275 GTB s/n 6787 has a well documented history, from new in Grigio Argento 18940 M (a light silver metallic) with a Nero (black leather) interior. 275 GTB s/n 6787 was sold new to a Sig. Biagini, in Italy before coming to Doug Ivey, an FAF customer, from Jasper, Alabama in the early 1970s. In Sept., 1976 275 GTB s/n 6787 was offered in the Ferrari Market Letter, issue # 0201 by FAF Motorcars, Tucker, GA on consignment from Doug Ivey. The engine had been rebuilt and new wire wheels and tires were fitted. As per John Apen, the then-owner of FAF, “it was heavy metal flake candy apple pink, an Alabama paint job”. John also added that it “needs to be stripped & repainted and the dash restored to original configuration, & plexiglass door windows replaced with glass. In 1977 275 GTB s/n 6787 was sold by FAF Motorcars to Dave Cowart, Tampa, FL and in 2000 the engine was rebuilt by Rick Bunkfeld, Vintage Restoration Services, Hartland, WI, one of the best in the business. 275 GTB s/n 6787 next surfaced at the RM Auction in Monterey in Aug., 2004 where she was sold to the current owner. From 2010 to 2012 275 GTB s/n 6787 was stripped to bare metal and the body was restored with very high quality metalwork and lead work and new Ferrari red paint by GTA Auto Metal Work, 2312 1/2 W. 2nd St, Santa Ana, CA.
The restoration was to a very high standard with excellent panel fit and gaps on the grille, headlight chrome trim, hood, doors and deck lid. Despite having been completed over ten years ago, the paintwork is of extremely high quality, looks fresh, and shows very few imperfections. The body is straight with excellent panel fit throughout. The chrome was renewed during the restoration and is excellent, with light wear and aging only. The lights and glass are excellent and the car is equipped with Carello H4 headlamps. The car sits on very nice Borrani wire wheels with correct curved ear spinners and with Michelin XWX tires which show some cracking in the sidewalls.
The interior has been finished to equally high standards as the exterior. The leather is in excellent shape overall, with minor wear on the driver’s seat bolster but no other blemishes of significance. The dash upholstery and other vinyl trim are excellent, including the headliner, parcel shelf, and roof pillars. The carpets are high quality and are excellent as well. The wood-rimmed steering wheel has been beautifully restored and remains in as-new condition. The dashboard is excellent with correct semi-gloss finish to the wood, as well as excellent switches, controls, and instruments. For unknown reasons, when the wood on the dash was replaced, the glove box and glove box door were eliminated! Additionally the door window vents were removed and the door glass was replaced with a single large door window glass.
Because the engine was rebuilt by Rick Bunkfeld, owner of Vintage Restoration Services, in Hartland, WI, the compression and leakdown figures are excellent. The engine pulls strongly to redline and the gearbox goes easily through the gears. The engine bay has excellent features including the correct factory yellow fuel lines, but would need the correct alternator, Cheney hose clamps, window washer bag, and Magnetti Marelli battery with hold down. Today it shows minor aging from use, but overall, it remains overall attractive and impressively clean and correct in its presentation. The trunk has been restored and the spare is a Borrani wire wheel with unused XWX tire.
Ferrari 275 GTB s/n 6787 GT is all matching-numbers with assembly sequence # 71; engine # 6787; Numero Interno # 146/64 and transaxle # 187 9 X 32. The California title is correct showing a 1965 year of production and is therefore eligible to compete in the 1960-1965 FIA classification, where it will be among the more competitive cars in its class. Like many of the higher-end Ferraris we quietly sell, we had multiple clients interested in 275 GTB s/n 6787 GT and so she was quietly sold and paid for just as this video was completed, and so we are showing 275 GTB s/n 6787 GT as an example of a just-sold and paid-for Ferrari.
